Before & After: Jewelry Photo Retouching Examples & What's Included Toronto

You've just received the raw files from your jewelry photoshoot. You zoom in 100% and panic. "Why does my brand-new ring have scratches?" "Is that a piece of lint on the diamond?" "Why is the gold slightly uneven?"

Don't worry. This is normal. Even the most expensive jewelry in the world looks imperfect under a 100mm macro lens and 1000 watts of strobe light. The secret to those flawless images you see in magazines isn't just the camera—it's the retouching.

At Peyman Khorram Photography Studio in Richmond Hill, post-production is 50% of the work. We don't just "take" pictures; we "make" them. Here is a breakdown of what happens to your images after the shutter clicks.

The "Raw Reality" vs. The "Commercial Polish"

1. Dust & Debris Removal (The Basics)

Before: Even in a clean studio, static electricity attracts dust. Under macro magnification, a single speck of dust looks like a boulder on a gemstone. The Fix: We manually remove every single speck using the Healing Brush and Clone Stamp tools in Photoshop. After: The surface is pristine, smooth, and untouched.

2. Metal Smoothing & Scratch Reduction

Before: Gold and silver are soft. Just handling a ring to put it on a stand creates micro-scratches. High-contrast lighting highlights these imperfections. The Fix: We use "Frequency Separation" techniques. This allows us to smooth out the texture (scratches) without blurring the edges or losing the metallic sheen. After: The metal looks liquid, poured, and perfectly polished.

3. Stone Clarity & Sparkle Enhancement

Before: Diamonds can look slightly "cloudy" or dark in certain facets due to light refraction. Inclusions (carbon spots) might be distracting. The Fix: We selectively brighten the stone, add contrast to the facets to create "pop," and sometimes remove distracting black inclusions (unless you want to show them for authenticity). We also desaturate any yellow tints in white diamonds to make them look colorless (D-E-F grade). After: The stone looks brilliant, full of fire, and high-value.

4. Focus Stacking Assembly

Before: As discussed in Article #4, a single macro shot has a shallow depth of field. The front prong is sharp, but the back of the band is blurry. The Fix: We take 10-20 images at different focus points and merge them in software like Helicon Focus or Photoshop. After: The entire piece is tack-sharp from front to back.

5. Background Cleanup & Clipping Paths

Before: The white background isn't pure white (RGB 255). It might be light grey (RGB 240) with shadows. The Fix: We cut the jewelry out from the background using a "Clipping Path" (pen tool). We place it on a pure white layer (for Amazon) or a transparent layer (PNG) for your website design. We then create a natural drop shadow or reflection that looks realistic, not fake. After: The product floats perfectly on the page, ready for any marketplace.

Real World Examples (Descriptive)

(Imagine seeing these images side-by-side on the blog post)

Example A: The Vintage Emerald Ring

  • Raw: The emerald has a large, distracting white reflection from the softbox. The gold prongs show tool marks from setting. The background is grey.

  • Retouched: The reflection is softened to show the green color. The prongs are smoothed to look like liquid gold. The background is pure white with a soft, natural shadow.

Example B: The Silver Chain Necklace

  • Raw: The silver links look a bit dark and messy. The clasp is slightly twisted.

  • Retouched: The links are brightened and contrast is added to make them look like chrome. The clasp is digitally straightened. The chain curve is perfected using the "Puppet Warp" tool.

Why Retouching is an Investment, Not an Expense

A "raw" photo says: "This is a used ring I took a picture of."A "retouched" photo says: "This is a flawless, brand-new luxury item."

In the competitive Toronto jewelry market, customers associate image quality with product quality. If your gold looks scratched in the photo, they assume the ring will arrive scratched. Retouching removes that doubt.
